The Icon Bar: News and features: Krisalis CD to be released

Krisalis CD to be released

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 08:46, 17/5/2001 | ,

CDRCI have just announced that they are to release a CD containing "nearly all" classic Krisalis games. The only detractors are apparently the MUFC games.

Also included on the disc are games from Gremlin - Zool and Premier Manager - as well as documentation, patches and updates to get all the games working on StrongARM machines (and hopefully most RiscPC and later machines, but StrongARM was the priority).

Pricing is to be confirmed (as with the release of Descent 2 from the same company), but is expected to be around 25 of your earth pounds.

Unregistered user Got the list from http://www.acorn-gaming.org.uk. Excellent list of released games for RISC OS, if you see something missing there let Gareth know.

Unregistered user You reckon James Pond 2 will be there? Cos that wasn't a Krisalis game...

Unregistered user Sorry, my mistake.

I just read James Pond - Krisalis, then James Pond 2 - must be from Krisalis too ...

Unregistered user Have you ever thought that RCI might be the ones to ask for the list?

Hmm, which ones do I have already...

Unregistered user I may be wrong here, but I don't think the following games will be on the CD :

Alone in the Dark
Battle Chess
Omar Sharif's Bridge
Sim City
World Championship Boxing Manager
World Class Leaderboard

There's only a day to find out...

Unregistered user Has anyone examined the RCI site? On the page about the disc, it gives a list of 'complete games' and games that only have the patches for OS4/Strong compatibility. Irritatingly, the few games which are included 'whole' are mostly ones which were on the Acorn User Games CD...

Unregistered user Yes, it seems like it's only a disc with patches and very few complete games but they do state that they "are in discussion with the original games
publishers to organise as many as possible"

Why didn't they just wait a bit to release the CD? Get more games on it. I'm a bit tired of RISC OS companies offering something that might become available sometime in the future. Why not wait releasing it until they've got some complete compilation rather than sending out a CD and then a couple of floppies as an upgrade or something similar? Surely it's a lot cheaper to ship one CD than two with a few weeks interval?

Info is needed every now and then but this type of release is a bit strange to say the least!

Don't get me wrong I do appreciate the effort but I don't like the way it's changed face since the original news item, I quote:
"RCI have just announced that they are to release a CD containing "nearly all" classic Krisalis games. The only detractors are apparently the MUFC games."

Either someone really misunderstood their released info or their list of Krisalis games is somewhat different to the one I found on 32-bit Acorn Gaming.

Unregistered user As I understand it what you have got on the CD is all that could be got. Alot of these games are 10 years old and the rights are well buried. Consider the fact that the games industry is always changing companies get bought or fall by the wayside very few remain the same throughout that period of time. RCI had to source the rights to put the games on the CD some companies were helpful while others were not...
So waiting longer to release the CD wouldn't have meant more games. However all the games on the CD work straight off on a SA, which most of the ones off the AU CD don't. Personally I don't have the CD as I have most of the originals...
The fact that Andrew (& Paul Johnson I think) bothered to chase up the companies to get the rights so that the release could be made at all should be applauded.

Unregistered user Hmm... most of those were on the AU CD :(

But those that weren't may still be worth it...

Descent looks like it might be a good buy too...

*speculates*

Unregistered user I just wish they'd put up a complete list of complete games. The site says there are "about thirteen or so" complete games but only lists nine games and then "A several more...". Typing in those four extra would hardly have done anyone in!
Still - good job R-Comp for getting these games fixed and out!

Unregistered user I've got a copy of the disc - it's mostly patches, with some games. Andrew wants to stress that you should really buy the disk for the patches, not the games.

As with Descent II however Cannon Fodder crashes on my machine, so I haven't got round to a review - two levels does not a review make :(

Unregistered user Cannon fodder works fine on my computer, as do 99% of the other games listed for the CD (Providing I own them, that is).

If you want I could write a few reviews (I've no idea why I'm volunteering to though :))

Unregistered user Never volunteer, J! I tend to take people up on the offer! :)

I think, having an old RiscPC 700 and a very old (possibly prototype) StrongARM found in someone's desk drawer, my machine *may* be to blame.

However, the only games I've had problems with is the commercial version of Quake (the freeware version, even with mods, is fine), and now Descent II and Cannon Fodder - the latter two both coming together, so that's only really two incidences and in games from the same company. My machine? their code? Time will tell.

Unregistered user That's interesting...
Quake (usually something to do with MemAlloc I think), Descent 2 (and possible the orig.), Cannon Fodder and Lemmings 2 crash on my machine.
Sad :-(

Unregistered user If you have troubles with the games send the bug reports to RCI otherwise (unsurprisingly) they won't be fixed. As soon as I get the Descent 2 bug list and I have some time I will be able to fix them... I'm sure those dealing with the other games will be as efficient.
