Free online backup from Partis Computing

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 16:12, 29/4/2004 |

Partis Computing have emailed to announce their free online backup service. Apparently all you have to do is email your files to vault@freebackup.net (I've encoded that, hope it doesn't get spammed!) and a minute or three later you get a URL emailed back from where you can recover your goodies.

No word on how this will pay for itself, although the FAQ mentions that they reserve the right to charge for larger restorations in the future. The main problem I thought of - if your hard drive crashes, the emails with the restoration URLs will have gone - is dealt with in the FAQ though, you just email them to get a list of your backups. You do need to keep using the same email address throughout however.

30GB attachment comming up. (there appears to be no limit that I can see other than you own ISP's attachment limit)

PS The email address appears in plain machine readable format in the HTML page as well!

Encoded it as in presumably added a "mailto" link not encoded to make it hard to read.

It wouldn't be much good if it appeared encoded to the reader. However, it looks like the news posting CGI un-encoded it :(

Andrew - what are you using to email a 30GB attachment? IIRC RISC OS can only handle 2GB files so Pluto/MPro wouldn't even be able to write the file to disc before sending.

I can't even see how you'd zip the data up for sending to a PC for email, unless you split it into 2GB parts?
