Hi all,
I'm a newbie to this forum but long term Acorn fan (a programmer from the BBC micro era).
I'm trying to resurrect a A3020 which I bought a long while ago.
Initially it booted to the desktop and I left in on for a couple of hours OK.
Now it boots with the change of colours to just virtually blank screen with cursor at top.
I read something via google about booting with the delete key pressed and this at least gives the message:
Warning: cmos ram for ether3 in socket 1 defaulted
Under I just get the cursor and no character input.
Do any of you have any idea how I can fix this?

Over time, the CMOS will lose its state. This is a typical thing to do with a RISC OS machine out of storage.
Warning: cmos ram for ether3 in socket 1 defaulted
This is normal, and just means the ethernet card state got reset. However:
Under I just get the cursor and no character input.
It is stuck waiting for something, perhaps. I'd suggest removing the ethernet card and any other expansion. Having said that, electronics can deteriorate over time, and it's not unknown for something that's been in storage to work briefly then give up. It may just be less hassle to get another if you have some kind of attachments to A3020s.
Finally, I don't know how the CMOS battery is fitted in the A3020, but it may be sufficient just to replace that. That is a common requirement in RiscPCs.

Assuming the A3020 is the same as the A3010, the battery will be soldered on to the motherboard by three legs. You could either desolder the battery completely or chop the legs off and solder on to the stumps. |

...Warning: cmos ram for ether3 in socket 1 defaulted... It seems to me, It's possible that since the machine worked first time, you have succeeded in partially recharging the cmos battery. If the machine was originally set up to boot from a network. Now it is looking for the network and you need to press F12 and type in 'configure bootnet off '. Now, when you restart the machine it should return to the normal desktop.
There is some Network bumf here. HERE
However, if you still get a flashing cursor then ( as Peter said ) something more drastic has occurd, hopefully only loose chips in sockets, but more likely terminal, component failure.

I stripped the machine down, removed the network card as planned - that cured the system boot hanging. Replacing the cmos battery cured the boot from not getting into desktop with correct screen mode and requiring the delete held down. Thanks guys - this one lives and I've learnt a bit! |
