Rescue me before I jump out a windowlaugh

Long story short I've resurrected my 8 year old 17" CRT from its resting place in my back room cupboard.

The reason for this is to test the A3000's I have and the A5000 that arrived this morning.

Looking at the A5000, I discovered a OSCillator had come loose so plugged that back in (it wasn't soldered in the first place - theres a socket at the back of the board).

Apply power.. HD spins up, and seemed to run otherwise nowt, no floppy mechanism test no "Foop" and boot etc. No Display.

Borlicks. Did a DELETE power on, thinking **** it I'll set up manually. Now seems slightly more encouraging I get the floppy grindy test and a "foop" noise from the speaker as well as the HD spinning up. However, still no display.

At this point I'm wondering whether it is my CRT thats goosed. So I grab a friend's laptop (another machine I'm supposed to be "fixing") plug that in, and "Hey presto" working CRT.

IS there a trick to this ? what do I have to do to get the CRT and A5000 playing nice ?

As far as I can tell I have everything plugged back in correctly, although I had to remove the HD cradle to refit that Oscillator, it was right at the back.

Is there anything I have missed that could be causing "NO Display" ?

Obviously not being able to "see" is really hampering my attempts to get the machine going. Any tips ?

Andrew Crybaby

When I was trying my A4000 with lcd monitors I had the same vga issues.

Was scared the vga port was broken, what it turned out to be however was that the first monitor couldn't accept the default resolution (of a cmos reset) that the A4000 was set to "No signal input" however the second monitor I tried (the lcd tv I use as a PC monitor) was happy with the low resolution, and on setting the resolution higher, then trying it on the original monitor, it then displayed.

Perhaps it's the same thing with your CRT. The CRT doesn't support the resolution that the A5000 is set to, and thus gives no display, but once it is set to a higher resolution then it may well display.

Perhaps it is. But I'm stuffed. Unless there is a "Hold down this key on boot" to set for vga. Reason being, I don'thave any other monitors/tv's I can try it with. I got the CRT out because I can't get a display on my main LCD.

If I cant "see" then I don't know how I am supposed to change monitor settings. I'm not even certain the machine is booting to desktop.

I'm not sure if there's a website with a full guide anywhere (all the different OS versions, etc.), but a quick google for "Acorn startup keys" returns this as the first result, which looks to be what you're after (and even features our very own filecore):

Wait for it to finish booting, hit F12, then ctrl-G. If it beeps then you'll know five things:

1. It's booted
2. You're at the command line
3. The keyboard works
4. Sound works
5. You're not deaf tongue

In exceptional circumstances !Boot will not be able to turn off the configured monitor setting. In this case, with the computer switched off, press and hold down the Delete and Shift keys, then switch the computer on. You can release these keys once the RISC OS 3 initialising message appears on the screen.

I would suggest the following:

- switch on with keypad 4 pressed (switches to monitortype 4 (SVGA)
- switch on with T pressed (configures seperate sync which is needed by most monitors)

On my trusty old A3000, I also needed to change two jumpers, but I think the A5000 does not need this.

You can also wait until it boots, then press F12, and at the command prompt set *monitortype to whatever is appropriate for your type of monitor. Or just manually cycle through them until you get an image displaying.

Got the A5000 running. smile

Had to set monitor type 2 by holding down at boot (Hi res mono) and then *configure for VGA.

Works great.

Trying with the A3000 now not sure how this will go as I have a 9-15 pin adapter. Did somebody say something about jumpers being set ? which ones? (I see a few on the board.)

Hi Andrew,
Glad to hear your A5000's working...
...much the same procedure for the A3000 - with a couple of wrinkles.
It will just about output VGA modes as long as your monitor is forgiving. Then keep fingers thoroughly crossed for modes 12, 13, 15...
...VIDC-Enhancer? wink

I wouldn't worry about jumpers just yet (I can dig out the details if you do need).
Try conf.sync 0 or 1 from the command-line if you can't get any output.

Tried the blind *configure typing on A3000 didnt have much joy, got or almost got output from 2 or 3 insofar as didnt get a "No signal" on the screen but still not quite there yet.

May need jumper settings.

You can get the A3000 Service Manual from here - http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/docs/Acorn/Manuals/Acorn_A3000SM.pdf

The jumper settings are shown on page 20. (The jumpers are referred to as "Links")

I'm not 100% sure which jumpers you need to change, but I'm sure that Charlie will know! smile
