Hi all
I have a couple of A5000s that have unfortunately suffered from leaking battery syndrome. Both of them boot into supervisor mode and I cannot get to the Desktop. I reckon both are condemned but they may be of interest to someone, perhaps for parts. For one of them, I have the original box, manuals and Learning Curve pack. So let me know if you are interested. Free to a good home! I live in the Notts area.
Regards
Daniel |

I'll take one, I desperately need one for the software preservation project.
Unfortunately I can't collect though, could you can ship it in the original box? Happy to pay all costs and more.

Both of them boot into supervisor mode and I cannot get to the Desktop. Usually corrosion around the battery means it won't retain CMOS settings (which may include boot settings), although it can sometimes affect other things too. There are old threads on this site about replacing the batteries and cleaning the traces of corrosion, try searching. Some links that may help:

Question: when you got to the Supervisor prompt, did you by any chance try typing *Desktop?

Thanks for your reply Jason.
I have looked at similar web pages before, which is how I got the idea to replace the batteries with AAAs. I managed to get my A3000 working but am sure that fixing the A5000s is beyond my capabilities, especially as a small chip fell off the motherboard of one of them as I was (carefully!) cleaning off the battery goo off the board. Having said that, the link you kindly posted for the A5000 battery replacement looks very helpful, so perhaps someone more capable than me, and someone good with a soldering iron and a lot of patience, could bring these machines back to life!
Typing *desktop didn't work. I reckon there were so many modules that were unplugged (or whatever the expression is ... I haven't been in Acornland for a few years!) so I reckoned I'd have a lot of "reinit-ing" to do before I had any chance of getting to the Desktop, and that the CMOS RAM was too damaged to remember what modules should be enabled next time I booted. I believe that one of the machines won't even boot into supervisor mode now, and just flashes the floppy disk light to report the error code.
It has been a few months since I last looked at these machines, and I have been meaning to ask for advice online for a while. I am going to follow up on the Preservation Project thread, and perhaps they can revive one of these old machines! I'd be happy to give these machines away, rather than scrapping them, especially if someone can make them work again!
Thanks again! |
