The CMOS in my A5000 exploded and I fixed the surrounding tracks and installed a new battery. Delete powered on and the CMOS, RTC and floppy are all functional again. However I am still getting disc errors 13 and 8 from IDE for both my installed drives. Both drives work fine in a RiscPC.

Checked the voltages and I am getting 5.02V and 12.08V so all fine there. Tried changing the ribbon cable but no luck. Also tried setting just one drive as master. I verified all PCB tracks from the IDE connector to the logic buffers (ICs 37 and 49), and made sure those ICs were powered and connected to the data bus still. Also checked all connections to the disc controller IC and all associated pull ups/downs.

Now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Forgot to say that !HForm can partially read the disc descriptor (including drive name and sectors), but it is corrupted.

I think we've seen those symptoms when a data line was shorted to earth or high!

The lines to the IDE connector are very close to the CMOS battery on the A5000 and the tracks are very thin. Any leakage from the battery can damage these tracks and make the IDE drive inoperable.

Unfortunately a common problem and not easily fixable.

Thanks for the hints, Chris and David. I checked the data bus lines to ic49 again and found a single bad connection (missed it before). Soldered a small wire and it boots fine now! Strangely, all lines between ic49 and the IDE connector were fine - the bad track was actually to the data bus itself.

Dave,
Are the disk drive tracks near the battery too as I've got an A5000 which doesn't recognize it ?

Xavier: yes. My machine also couldn't read floppies and I found a broken track with a multimeter.
