if he's so great, why isn't he a professor? Because calling yourself The Professor is so much less ambiguous than The Doctor, and the series thrived on a certain sense of mystery surrounding the lead character, especially for the first 3 or 4 years.
In character terms, there's the fact that he has no reason to call himself The Professor - he clearly isn't one, either in the sense of professing his beliefs or in the sense of holding a particular position at a place of learning. OTOH, he is does apparently have a number of doctorates and may or may not be a medical doctor.
And if you don't like those reaons, Professor Who is an even worse title for a TV series than Doctor Who. |

Anyway, shouldn't it be Doctor Whom? Maybe he's really Doctor Hoo, and everyone just spells his name wrong. Have we ever seen him write his name down, so we know the correct spelling?  |

His name isn't Doctor Who, that's the TV show, he's known only as The Doctor, except that one time, maybe that was a joke though |
