riscos.info - C for the masses

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 11:33, 28/3/2002 | , ,

Peter Naulls, he of the Unix porting and other initiatives, has launched his new riscos.info site.

The aim is to provide a comprehensive guide to C programming under RISC OS, with copious personal experience and discussions thrown in.

But that's not all - Peter's also taken over maintenence of lcc for RISC OS, a small, fast ANSI C compiler. This should give novices especially access to an easier to use free compiler that will work on almost any RISC OS machine.

Unregistered user Yes Peter, I'm a bit slow today, I'm busy doing some work on something else RISC OS related ;)

Unregistered user I've had a quick look (I'll have a proper look tonight) but this looks fantastic. Very useful! :-)

Unregistered user good news, finally for a ROS programming newbie something really useful, since I am experienced c developer, I can't be bothered to try BasicV.. :D

Unregistered user Hmm, after saying how nice it is (and it is), it's not exactly what you'd expect to find at riscos.info, now is it? :-/

Unregistered user Shocking isn't it? Who in their right mind would put information on programming RISC OS on riscos.info.

What else would you expect to find on it?!

Unregistered user Exactly... :)
Err, no!

Don't take the piss you anony mouse coward ;).

And don't get me wrong, I like it, I think it's fine. But someone going to riscos.info might expect to find info about RISC OS itself. Which isn't /quite/ what there is.

[it wasn't a grumble, just a random comment!!!]

Unregistered user Maybe. But I don't see you (or anyone else) rushing to write content for such a site :-)

Besides, look at:

http://www.riscos.com/
http://www.riscos.co.uk/
http://www.riscos.org/
http://www.riscos.net/
http://www.riscos.org.uk/
http://www.riscos.me.uk/ (Iconbar)

All provide extensive information on RISC OS in
general. It'd be silly repeating it. I'm
sure everyone much prefers riscos.info's current
content.

Peter, riscos.info pr0n mast0r.

Unregistered user "But I don't see you (or anyone else) rushing to write content for such a site :-)"

You just haven't looked hard enough :P

"Besides, look at..."<snip>

Yes, they are there, but IMVHO none of them gives a decent picture of RO to genuine newbies. Not that I'm even saying such a thing is needed, but riscos.info would have been an ideal place for it. Note also that I'm not saying that you should change it, or that it's a bad place for the programming info.

"It'd be silly repeating it."

It's be nice for it to be done right for once, and somewhere appropriate.

I've said this before; I never repeat myself!

"Don't get me wrong!"

Unregistered user Well, if someone writes a decent "About RISC OS" piece, I'll prominantly display it on the front of TIB and/or riscos.me.uk.

There, challenge issued. If I get more than one (hah!) we'll see what the best course of action is.

Unregistered user Just visited the site - and I am downloading GCC right now (at 80Kb/sec - hahaha!). I'm really pleased that each download will fit on a floppy disc - now I can take it home and give it a whirl.

I've already used EasyC/C++ and found it to be somewhat unstable. Many commands (esp. C++ ones) were not supported. Nevertheless, it is a valuable learning tool which has helped introduce me to the world of C/C++.

Thanks for a really great site, Paul!

ps. I'm /really/ looking forward to reading the section on C + Assembler ;-)

Unregistered user I'm Peter ;-)

If someone wanted to write a more comprehensive
piece on EasyC/C++ then I'd be quite happy to include it, especially regarding its development status.

Unregistered user oh, people who're talking about decent risc os introductions should take a look at:
http://www.cuci.nl/~pscheele/ACorner/folders.htm

woops, it is all in dutch.. well, time for a translation I guess. *grin*

Unregistered user ..maybe you should read a little more carefully ;-)

lcc will indeed fit on a floppy, but take a
look at the GCC archives. It is packed into
serveral archives precisely for the reason that
it can be transported on floppies.

Unregistered user Great idea - thanks for the hard work Peter.

By the way, I wonder what the status of the old CAUG material is these days ? It would be nice to have the stuff available on a web site.

Regards,

Max

Unregistered user My C/C++ programming is strictly of the 'Hello
World' level. When it comes to using the
libraries, GUI etc I'm completely lost. I'd like
to be able to port some of the open source programs
so I think this is a great idea - I just might be
able to learn how to do so.

Unregistered user There's now links on the page to general info sites :p

Anyway, the page has been substantially updated
since its launch, and will continue to be, so check back. And please, if you have anything to contribute to the site, it would be most welcome.

I've now had 100 lcc downloads - and not a single bug report (so far), so that's excellent too.

Maybe it just means people aren't using it ;-)
