Repton's future looks bright

Repton on a Nokia 7650 Mobile PhoneMasabi have released their version of Repton for mobile phones, and it is now available for purchasing and downloading from their website. This new version includes the 12 original levels and five new bonus levels, four tutorial levels to help you get used to the controls and the Repton concept and completely revamped graphics which run smoothly at full screen.

Also, as mentioned previously on Acorn Arcade, Superior Software have re-entered the games market as Superior Interactive and are creating a version of Repton for the PC, but that's not all. They also say on their website that a Game Boy Advance version of Repton will soon be ready.

Unregistered user Only if you think that Masabi would produce an unofficial version. I was thinking of an official release from Superior Interactive or Masabi.

It's not really the right type of game for mobile entertainment really, is it? Mind you, the other proposed games aren't really mindless arcade action, either.

Unregistered user Another problem with Exile is that there are a lot of keys - especially if you want a GameBoy version of it! Even a mobile would have difficulty (around 14 keys to play with?)

On the PC, I doubt that this would be an issue!

Unregistered user I would have thought that Pipeline and Codename: Droid both suffer from the same problem as Exile, although I don't think even Pipeline comes close to needing that many keys.

Unregistered user Isn't it a bit sad that the latest gaming news are of an ancient BBC game that's being converted to PC and portables?

Little or nothing to do with RISC OS gaming other than the game in question was once converted to RISC OS (not that I object to this being news worthy).

Unregistered user Well, the SDL port is good news for "the platform" but discussion about that has dried up. I suppose that people find discussing finished products and potential releases much more exciting than doing the hard work of actually coding something.

Of course, with an SDL port, someone could try to port ElectrEm (http://electrem.emuunlim.com/) to RISC OS as that has an SDL backend.

How many RISC OS platform USERS are programmers or are have any interest in being programmers? Probably a higher percentage than on some other platforms (based on the repeated "it's got a great BASIC" quotes) but that doesn't mean that everybody should get of their a**e and start programming if they have something to say about the wealth/lack of software and games.

If the users are complaining about a lack of games, telling them to stop whining and write some games themselves isn't exactly the best way to respond. Those with the skills and interest to write games should be the ones writing the stuff, NOT the common user that only wants to PLAY games.

The game playing users could of course do the developers a big favour and tell them what type of games they would like to play (realisticly of course). Certain types of games are always going to be difficult due to lack of hardware and resources and the users/buyers must realise that.

Unregistered user This is true but try to recruit help using the internet for an Acorn game's development and you'll get very little response. A decent and likely commercial incentive is required.

Unregistered user Maybe I was a little harsh, Gunnlaugur. After all, the discussion about SDL might have tailed off because everyone went off to write some games...

I personally don't have a problem with this news
story grabbing the limelight. I'd be happy to see many of the old 8 bit titles reach a wider audience.

Unregistered user Shouldn't quake2, F16 fighting Falcon be possible with the Iyonix? Theres no fp but FPEm2 should work, and it has a nifty geforce2 (depending on what drivers have actually be written for it).

Unregistered user I spoke to an old friend of mine who knows people in the mobile gaming industry. Apparently, the market isn't big enough to have any large projects, which means that the games for the time being will be:

1) Conversions (which this is an example) requiring little work

2) Simple games

and/or:

3) Done by individuals who aren't out to make big bucks
