First of all, apologies for the title of this news item - I was just watching Star Wars
. Some of you may not have noticed that
Microdigital's Newsdesk feature has been reinstated again, and now contains information about
Microdigital's presence at the RISC OS Expo and some photographs of a rack mount Omega computer, although the page states that there are currently no photos of the actual Omega in the case, they are just an example of what it may look like. Its all starting to look very promising in the Microdigital arena!

I think the article indicates that the images are of an Omega in a 1U case, it's just that it's an older case design. The new case design (which isn't pictured) includes space for a floppy drive. No mention of the infamous network card though! |

Hmm... a 1U server with no network card? Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the exercise? |

The info's not that clear on the page. I'm currently looking at two different cases, not an old one and a new one. The black case has a CD drive space and USB ports front and back, with the main connectors at the back. The gorgeous bare aluminium case also has space for a standard 3.5" device (e.g. floppy) as well as the CD as the internal configuration's different. It has all connections except the power at the front for better access. This is the case which was shown at Wakefield and Holland. The cases take a standard Omega motherboard and one PCI card, which at the moment will usually be a network card. Any other questions just ask - I'll make an official announcement when I'm in a position to supply them. |

Alan, Do you stock the Omega right now? I'm curious about the spec of the machine, as I contacted MD Europe, and they said that the spec was what was on MD's website, does that mean all the MPEG/OpenGL stuff works? |

Was "David Prosser's digital Cannon" used in dealing with the press? ;-) (FFS! It's "Canon" with two "n"s - *one* in the middle and *one* at the end. How hard is it to read the name straight off the thing you're talking about?) |

Garry, their web site shows what the specs will be when all the bells and whistles are finished - I try to keep my own site up to date with the current specs as I know them (e.g. all machines now have a min. of 40Gb as standard now), although it's not quite right at the moment. The machines going out just now don't have the acceleration etc. in them yet, but the essentials such as the floppy work. I hope that akes sense, it's late and my fingers are knackered. |

Alan, thanks for the info, you should see about becoming MD's spokesman, given their problems with the press. I suppose I'll wait and see how it all pans out with the add-on CPU etc. |

I've got enough to do! Besides, I do try to keep impartial. If someone wants an Iyonix I'll sell them one. If they want an Omega I'll sell them that. |

Glad you are so busy! Fair enough about being impartial though. It's just so frustrating that the Omega appears to be out, but *still* hardly any info! |
