Because the best show vote was mandatory, I can't attend any of the shows, and the nomination of ROL admitting their pointlessness being rejected, I decided to vote for ROUGOL, as a vote for that happening there. naughty laugh

It's in the best development section.

Well, DVI-output VF is a refinement of an existing product. Vpod is an entirely new one, requiring entirely new drivers and hardware.

And incidentally, I believe it to be the most advanced podule ever built in terms of manufacturing processes used. (I can't think of any others with BGA parts on, for example.)

And yet it still only works on a fifteen-year-old machine...

How does the ViewFinder differ in this respect?

Sadly, that reflects the state of the RISC OS market - it's designed for that hardware because so many people are still using that hardware.

Then I'm confused as to why you commented at all.

I was pointing out that both the ViewFinder and the Vpod, while both undoubtedly flashy upgrades, are nevertheless flashy upgrades for fifteen-year-old hardware that was outmoded and underpowered when it first came out, no matter how many flashy upgrades can be slapped on it. And while the lifespan of a RiscPC is undoubtedly longer than that of your average Windows clone from the same period, it is not indefinite, and while it was a good piece of hardware, we can't cling onto it forever, and it really is time for the RISC OS world to move onto other things. This is why I voted for the BeagleBoard.

Which is rather remarkable really. Imagine making upgrades for 15 year-old computers which are worthwhile and economically viable to produce.

I quite agree and I am extremely pleased to see RISC OS 5 being made to work on new hardware.
In the meantime I still want to use RISC OS and my RiscPC+Unipod+vpod with especially Artworks2.9, OvationPro, Sibelius and the new PS3 driver will do the trick for a while longer.

Having voted, I would like to say that I think by far the most important development this year has been the Beagleboard porting work done. It is my opinion that this is critical for the survival of the platform and I really hope that this continues at its current pace into 2010 - all involved with this and specifically Jeffrey have done a fantastic job so far smile It is just a shame that there seems to be a shortage of the boards (digikey don't get them in stock till March!)
