Adrian Lees unveils Evince software for RISC OS

Posted by Mark Stephens on 10:24, 25/10/2019 |

If you are still undecided about the RISC OS Show tomorrow, then hopefully this should be the final prompt you need....

Adrian Lees has been busy working on a much improved sharing solution for RISC OS. There are several VNC solutions which let you remotely view the RISC OS desktop from another machine, using a single keyboard and mouse. But I find them generally quite slow and clunky. They lack features, polish and speed and do not run on all machines.

The aim of Evince is to fill this gap. Evince runs on your RISC OS machine and allows you to use VNC to connect t to RISC OS from another machine, sharing the mouse and keyboard. It has been optimised for speed and also makes better use of all the VNC compression protocols.

Scroll wheel support is included and you have clipboard support (so you can just and paste between your RISC OS and Linux boxes.

It also has a neat trick (which will be familiar if you use Synergy) where you can switch between different machines (ie jump from RISC OS back to Linux) by moving the cursor off the side of the screen.

So far it has been tested with machine running various flavours of Linux, Windows, Rapsbian and MacOS.

As someone with multiple machines and one monitor, I am really excited at the prospect of a decent sharing solution. Expect a review as soon as we can harass Adrian into giving us a copy!

Adrian has given us some teaser images to show you what is possible and will be at the show to demonstrate further.

Evince is unfortunately not a good name, because of the well known Evince Viewer for Linux/Gnome.

I'm aware that a couple of people have said that. It is hardly competition and I find that when searching the web one has to enter 'RISC OS' amongst the search terms anyway.

That said, the name has not yet been registered, but it perfectly captures what I'm trying to achieve. "Evince. vb. tr. to make something obvious or show something clearly."

For people to whom I did not speak at the show, there is more here and above all I am looking for feedback from users as to what would make it useful for them. Like all the best projects it fulfils for its author a real need, and is already in constant use, but I suspect many of us are using multiple machines, be they 'Pi's, Macs, Windows or Linux boxes.

Suggestions re an alternative name also welcomed, and bear in mind that whilst it currently uses the VNC protocol, and only VNC, that may change. Its aim is to integrate multiple machines, and that may require augmentation with other standard protocols for sharing audio, data files, filing systems/drives etc. or even the use of proprietary but portable new protocols.

It looks like a really useful application, and I think it could be modified to be a very useful IP CCTV viewer.

I can imagine seeing the video stream of each IP camera displayed on screen similar to how you do for each computer screen in Evince.

Having an easy way to monitor the security of your house/business using a Raspberry Pi with RISC OS and some IP camera's would be pretty cool.

Most camera's use Power-over-Ethernet though which might be a show-stopper at the moment though.

There have been scary stories in the past with competing names, so I thought it would be best to mention it.

What helps here is that it is a true english word. But that didn't stop Windows from becoming a valid trademark...

It is certainly a good name wrt describing what it does in one short word!

I read it yesterday, and I would be very happy to have such software, because I have many machines and my KVM Switch is not an ideal solution for all use cases (it is 16 Port 4K HDMI, so goes a long way, but the cabling is a nightmare).

So please please please finish a first version along the "minimum viable product" principle - don't get lost in perfectionism! Release what you have!

I am trying to think of something. Remote Access. RISC OS. Network. Cross Platform. VNC viewer. I am sure we can mangle a name from those components.

Thanks for your development!
