GEK Compilation CD

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:17, 29/8/2001 | ,

APDL/ProAction are to release a CD of GEK's back catalogue. There are four commercial retro titles, and although unconfirmed there are six freeware games by the same guys that may boost the CD to ten games.

The CD, costing £9.90 (+£1 p&p), contains at least the following:

  • Emotions (platform game)
  • Frak (classic, um, platform game with level designer)
  • Joust (flying jousty thing)
  • AstroSmash (alien shoot)

Mmm... Frak. I remember playing that one on my Electron (and yes, the rude hacked version on the Beeb). For the RISC OS versions you'll need RO3.5 and 8MB of RAM however.

Unregistered user Hmmm... looks good...

But I should now apologise. AstroSmash isn't the fourth commercial title - EuroBlaster is. I got confused between the two when writing the announcement, and it took something of an age to actually track down which was which.

So, in my best Homer Simpson voice, Doh!

Unregistered user Thanks for the comments. Yeah, the site looks a tad better than it did but I made the navbar flip to the original one for those keener on the old design :-)

Sadly EMD has now lost its remaining graphics artist so we are stuck on that one :-(

Unregistered user Out of interest do any of these games require VRAM to work, I've got 1mb willl that be enough?

Andrew Weston Message #87068, posted at 08:44, 3/9/2001, in reply to message #87067
Unregistered user Jonathon -
Overcast will require 2Mb of VRAM for title screens for example although for the main gameplay that could be avoided if there is a lot of objection to it.
I don't think EMD needs 2MB either but Nathan perhaps knows better

Jonathan Atherton Message #87069, posted at 21:52, 3/9/2001, in reply to message #87068
Unregistered user Thank you Andrew, I think if the graphics look alot better with 2mb VRAM then you should stick too that, it'll give me a
good exscuse to upgrade. Overcast 2 does look really nice who says games need to be 3D to be any good, ha my one of my favourite gamesis Abuse and that's 2D, anyway keep up the goodwork, I think Overcast looks like it could be something special.

Unregistered user But just to clarify that Sumisu San is not on the CD and all possible future GEK releases will be via VOTI.

Unregistered user and of course the announcement doesn't mention anything other than the previous GEK titles.. yet if VOTI complete the titles surely they should get some sort of financial reward?

Nathan Message #87079, posted at 06:55, 7/9/2001, in reply to message #87078
Unregistered user Maybe I'm reading this wrong so I'll clarify, VOTI have no ties with APDL or this CD. All current and future GEK stuff will be up to VOTI to release/publish or to choose a publisher.

David Bradforth Message #87080, posted at 07:53, 7/9/2001, in reply to message #87079
Unregistered user Okay... time for some clarification...

Frak is a ProAction product
Emotions, Euroblaster and Joust are Datafile products, which are with APDL cos APDL bought The Datafile

The freeware/shareware titles are just that, and have been available for many years on various PD cds. Any titles VOTI have taken on - the incomplete ones from GEK - will be up to VOTI to decide whom, where and when to release. The four commercial titles [not forgetting that EuroBlaster is commercial, AstroSmash isn't - see before] on this disc are up to APDL and ProAction to decide when, and how to release.

That's better...

David
