Happy 10th Birthday Risc PC

Posted by Andrew Duffell on 22:37, 16/4/2004 | , , , , , ,

Risc PCToday is the 10th birthday of the Risc PC computer which was announced on 16th April 1994 by Acorn Computers. The Risc PC marked an epoch in the computing world, providing a fast machine with the ultimate in expansion capabilities.
Risc PCs were the flagship machine of the Acorn world until late 2002, and had many different upgrades that contributed to their longevity such as the StrongARM and Kinetic upgrades, and the viewfinder graphics card.

I'm sure you could find a bottom-of-the-range one for a few quid, and then you can join the RiscPC owners' club. ;-)

I suppose you could try sweet talking Castle, or you could etch it yourself :)

Andy. Owning one ten year old RiscPC and a slightly newer one - prefering them to the PC by far :D

Woo, fifteen years! Balloons And still going strong! Balloons How many of you who used your RPC at the ten year mark continue to use it today? I just upgraded mine with a 1GB CF to replace its creaky old HDD...

Despite having a number of alternatives - desktop with Fedora, a Nokia N800 and a couple of laptops running Ubuntu - I still switch on the RISC PC once or twice a week.

I just upgraded mine with a Vpod.

And do you think the VPOD was a worthwhile upgrade?

I do, daily. Currently, I'm using it to VNC to my PC whose display is broken (as well as e-mail, Usenet, terminal emulator, and some browsing).

I just upgraded mine with a 1GB CF to replace its creaky old HDD...
Now there are 16GB-plus CF cards, I'm starting to get interested in a similar upgrade; what did you have to do, and where did you get the parts?

Quick google: 32GB under 50 pounds, 48GB about 200 pounds.

Tough question. Can I justify it in purely economic and rational terms? Probably not (actually make that definitely not). However, it does make me more inclined to use Techwriter, Artworks, Photodesk and Riscript more (I'm a Maths teacher and most of the textbooks I use have pdf versions) as the extra screen space is a real benefit.

Simple, really: bought a basic cheap'n'nasty IDE <-> CF adapter from eBay for a couple of quid, and used an old CF I had lying around. Format it with !HForm and bingo, the RPC is finally running quiet after all these years! I can give you a walkthrough if needed.

Quick google: 32GB under 50 pounds, 48GB about 200 pounds.
Crikey. What on earth could you possibly have that needs so much space on a RiscPC? I managed to fill the 1GB, but only just - and that was centralising the content from three old RPC hard drives that were lying around I certainly don't see the need for anything over 4GB. Maybe you just have a lot of files.

Also remember there may be problems addressing larger capacities.

That's interesting. I tried that a few months back and couldn't get the CF card to format in !HForm. Can't remember the error, but it was something silly and I couldn't work out what was wrong so gave up for now.

You're doing something wrong big grin I used the same method on my A7000, cheap ebay IDE to CF and hform, hform even correctly works out the numbers of sectors/heads/cyclinders as the adapter is returning them.

I'll have to dig out the stuff and have another go. I can't remember what the problem was, but !HForm kept giving some silly error.

Andy.

You can buy a 4gig with IDE2CF from APDL for £20. They'll also format it, 'install' the operating system and check its okay with the RiscPC for nowt extra. Thats how I did it anyway.

I do have a lot of files. I tend not to delete things (aka tidy up) often, either.

I've got a 15GB drive with 500MB free, plus another one for Linux, so 32GB should be plenty for the forseeable future.

Is there an app that works like "du" on unix for RISC OS? Maybe I'll find some nice surprises!

Also remember there may be problems addressing larger capacities.
32GB is still well within what RO can cope with, isn't it?

There's RealCount, but apparently it doesn't work correctly with E+/F+ formatted discs.

Depends which version of RISC OS you have.

Since we're talking rpc here, it's probably either 128 or 256 (since who'd have an rpc with less than 3.6 these days?); so either way, 32 is fine. I think I was thinking of earlier incarnations of RISC OS.

You have one? I didn't know rpcs even came with less than 3.6. You need a minimum of 3.7 even to have a 202MHz SA installed.

Could be an incompatibility between the CF card and the RiscPC's IDE controller.

I know my CF card (a Kingston 4 GiB Elite Pro) wasn't quite compatible, and had random errors. Stuck it on the RapIDE32, and it works perfectly.
