New books for RISC OS

Posted by John Hoare on 19:07, 6/4/2003 | , , , , , ,

Alligata Media, run by David Bradforth of ProAction has announced that they are reprinting Martyn Fox's book First Steps in Programming RISC OS Computers. Although a second edition is available on his website, I always find this kind of thing far more useful in paper form, although obviously some people disagree. The book will cost £15 including P&P, and is non-profit-making (£5 of the cover price will go to the Cats Protection League). Copies should be available at Wakefield at a slightly reduced price, although this is not confirmed. As the book is on a strict print run, email Dave at david@alligatagroup.co.uk to confirm your interest. I already have.

Alligata Media are also publishing First steps with RISC OS 4 in May, as this Drobe article reports. Hopefully this will be the beginning for a whole new venture in RISC OS books, as it's something that is desperately needed. As long as they're proof-read of course, something which I hope Alligata has learnt from some other RISC OS companies and publications. Ahem.

Unregistered user I'm hoping to revise my other book, "A Beginner's Guide to Wimp Programming" (actually a "prequel" because it was written and published first, in 1992).

I'd like to give it a major re-write, though, so it may take a little time.

Martyn: That would be fantastic :-) An up-to-date copy of that would be very, very, very useful...

A lot of my desktop programs are based around the wimp shell provided in that book - particularly the menu creating functions. It would be a worthwhile read - especially if updated for RISC OS 4 (and 3!)
