The Icon Bar: News and features: Nominations open for the Drobe Icon Bar awards 2009

Nominations open for the Drobe Icon Bar awards 2009

Posted by Jeffrey Lee on 20:30, 13/12/2009 | , , , , ,

For the past several years Drobe have run their yearly Drobe awards, in which members of the public nominate and vote for the RISC OS products and people who they believe have best served the platform over the course of the year. After a quick check with Drobe foreman Chris Williams to make sure he wasn't planning on running the awards this year, the staff at TIB decided it would be a good idea if we picked up the metaphorical torch and ran the awards ourselves. So, ladies and gentlemen, prepare for the first annual Icon Bar awards!

This year there will be four categories open for nomination. Once a suitable number of nominations have been collected, the voting booths will be opened. Then at the end of the year the votes will be tallied and the winner and runner-up for each category will be revealed. The categories for this year are:
  • Best commercial product
  • Best non-commercial product
  • Best new development
  • Best RISC OS show/event
Of course, if you want to nominate something that doesn't fit into any of the above categories, feel free to send it in and we'll see what we can do!

Update: Thanks for all your suggestions. Voting is now open until the end of the year.

Plus a fancy image with which they can adorn their website! Surely that's what everyone wants for Christmas?

(Exact image TBD)

Ooh, definitely that. It was a great presentation - I know 'cuz I was there and it was probably my video you watched. I sent an email asking for a copy of the slideshow, but never got a response unhappy

Best RISC OS show/event:

Am I allowed to nominate the London Show big smile

Or maybe that goes down as "Best 1st attempt at organising a show by a group who had never done anything like that before and were astonished that nothing went wrong".

Could probably do with a snappier title.

I'm with Trevor on this one - it's a very significant step forward in graphics development.

Perhaps it's time for NetSurf to be fobbed off with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' for best non-commercial - and anyway, didn't they say they were going to stop RISC OS development? grin

Both products are great and would be worthy winners of the category. The more nominations, the better!

Best commercial product: Postscript 3 Printer Drivers (1st) for transforming the efficacy of RISC OS for serious print work. Artworks (2nd), which has become by far the most powerful and versatile graphics package available to RO users.
Best non-commercial product: Firefox (1st): still the most capable RO browser and quite useable on a fast machine. Netsurf (2nd): keep up the good work!
Best new development: RISC OS on BeagleBoard (1st, 2nd and 3rd!)

You can have what ever you like as long as you deliver Javascript functionality in Netsurf. duck

Now the serious bit.

Flame Alert - Best commercial product - RISC OS 6.16 as it has some nice visual touches and additions like 64bit colour modes and support for Vpod, pity it not available to all hardware platforms. Followed by Postscript 3 for at last bring this element of printing up to date.

Best non-commercial product - Firefox on RISC OS followed by GCC and any of Dave Higton's USB apps..great fun racing that car around my desk

Best new development - RISC OS on the Beagleboard

Best RISC OS show/event - MUG show

I was on the point of nominating this earlier. But being pedantic, the 64k colour modes/sprites, etc. (in RO6.14) are documented as being a 2008 development. Perhaps the rules could be bent to include it anyway.

Aah, well now you point it out I agree as I have just checked 6.16 details and it added no new end user features but just cleaned up the 6.14 code.

Still depends on the rules of the game as they say as to if it can be included or not.

Anyway Postscript 3 drivers are a equally worthy nomination.
