Pace Announce "Home Gateway" v2

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:39, 29/1/2001 | ,

It appears that Pace's new device goes a lot further than just standard Dreamcast gameplay. In a press release sent this morning, they announced an all-in-one entertainment centre that would act as a gateway to gameplay on other home devices - such as wireless handheld devices - with the set top box acting as a "jukebox" to serve the games from its on-board 40GB+ hard drive.

This is on top of access to digital TV via all available routes (cable, satellite, xDSL etc.), and a model released last year already has personal video recording capabilities (you know, pausing live TV, recording multiple channels while watching another and so on). Gaming is probably going to be via 'pay-per-play', or hire for a fixed time period.

The full text of the press release can be found here: http://www.pace.co.uk/content.asp?id=442&template=0

Unregistered user I reckon this could be quite significant if Pace succeed. For those of you who don't know the research community (and various companies) are looking into home gateways. The important thing about them is that all traffic into and out of your home is likely to go through one (eventually). In theory you'll eventually have a completely wired house, so you'll even be able to switch the lights off from work. Other interesting possibilities being looked at include wireless recharging, ie your PDA is recharged simply by putting on the table as opposed to plugging it in.

Anyway at the moment it looks like it's centred around Dreamcast technology but if (and that's a mighty big IF) RISC OS were running on the gateway then it'd effectively be in control of your house. However I suspect linux is a more likely option as it's better for dealing with security issues.

Unregistered user Pace has plans to use RISC OS for a home control center. This is the future of RISC OS (said RISCOS Ltd. at the RISC OS EXPO 2000). The think we all don't know is whether this will start with the DC-compatible STB or at a later time.

Unregistered user A bit more info from The Palm Beach Post (via the Cybervillage):
"Pace has a prototype of the box which is smaller than a videocassette recorder and has a computer hard drive inside."
and
"Sega was the most willing and eager to work with us," Novak said. "But both Nintendo and Sony have said they are going to license out their game platforms for integration like this."
Woo²!
