The Icon Bar: News and features: TIB World Domination Scheme

TIB World Domination Scheme

After telling you about future plans for some new websites, it's time to let you in on a few developments already taking place on this server.

After much hard work, Jamie Temple has officially released MiniDisc. For those of you not in the know, MiniDisc is a handy little app that, amongst other things, removes all of the drive icons from your toolbar and gathers them together in one tidy program, reducing desktop clutter. You can also add shortcuts and filters using easy-to-use controls. Pretty damned cool it is too. For more info, the website is at minidisc.iconbar.com.

The Coder's Cauldron site has been given a refurbishment. As well as being the home of Risc GeL - an OpenGL style 3D graphics API - three new projects have been added: sound player FDSound, C WIMP library LimpX and SunBurst game editor SunEd. The site has info, forums and downloads.

And finally, this one didn't quite make it in time due to a problem with the previous host but given my impending departure for a few days in sunnier climes I'm going to announce it anyway. The RISC OS banner network is moving in to banners.iconbar.com. I hope you'll make them feel welcome!

Plans are already afoot for Icon Bar server #3, to be hosted in a better facility with faster access. So if you have a project that's in need of a home, drop us a line at webmaster@iconbar.com - but give me a chance to get back from my jollies first! :)

Unregistered user Tried minidisc.. I'm impressed, also the configure plugin is very well thought about.
Maybe RS should licence this piece of marvel to use as default on their laptop... (Jamie, why not ask them, you could make some £££ there :))

Unregistered user With regard to MiniDisc. Isn't Sony going to get upset about trademark infringement?

Unregistered user Sorry to anyone who tried logging in to the RISC OS Banner Network using Oregano. It was handleing the cookie incorrectly and thinking it had allready expired when you logged in. This problem has been rectified by extending the cookie length from 30minutes to 24hrs.

Unregistered user Sorry about the MiniDisc manual. To be honest, it's not all that complete really. I have plans to rewrite it some day... any offers?

I like the title.!
Thought I'd get it in there before anyone else said it!

Neo #2 is a PC-shaped PC, and although it'd be technically possible to cram it into a proper 1u server case I'm not confident it could be done easily, at least not without major downtime - partly while waiting for someone to take it to London.

The line into ArgoNet's offices isn't great, and if they replace it (with one from another vendor) then I'll have to change all the DNS rules anyway - or they won't get enough IP addresses to host the server, or they'll get ADSL/Cable and have no spare IP addresses at all. Getting another machine is costly, but it allows me to get a machine on a faster line, in a proper hosting facility where the power doesn't drop in every storm, and set it up at my leisure with no downtime.

Plus I don't actually have a PC at home, although the ADSL connection has reduced the need for a Linux server to serve news, recipes etc. I have to stay in the office to play FPS games! Neo #2 is pretty well specced, it just needs a new sound card and upgraded graphics card to become a kick-ass games machine, video recorder etc.

Mmm... Scan's 'today only' page has 120GB hard drives for £129.50 ex-VAT. Drool...
