Wakefield 2001 show report

The show report's uploading as I type; no great suprises over those covered in the previews, and so I waited until getting home before rushing out the review; however, it was an interesting day all the same, and well worth a visit.

Unregistered user I'm at the show at the moment. Any plans for going to the pub at any point? I'm yet to see if I can talk Dave Walker in to it, as I'm looking after his stand at the moment so he can go and talk to dgs. I'd like to meat anybody who's about and interested in going to the pub afterwards; I'm wearing dark green jeans, greenish shirt, with a black and green coat.

Unregistered user I am just sorry I couldn't have been there.

MD showing the Omega was very good news indeed, congratulations to all at MD on that one. The crash Rich experienced is to be expected - it after all is a prototype. But now we can be more optimistic about its release in the nearer future than before.

The comment about 300MHz overclocked SA is well taken, I think if I recall correctly the SA is very much at its upper end (critical path wise) at 233MHz so devices running at 287 (as in the Omega and in overclocked systems) is pushing the envelope somewhat (300MHz would even be more so). Typically, however, some chips in batches manage overclocking better than others so long as the right ones are chosen it may just all work. I would, however, caution that the speed improvement between 233 and 300 is marginal for all but processor intensive tasks.

Unregistered user Oh what fun when the fire alarm went off at 12.50 pm Sunday!
Good show all round though, and nice to meet up with old friends.

Unregistered user Anyone there on Saturday evening who heard a "fight" (presumably verbal not physical) between someone at Castle and someone at MicroDigital? I'd left by then, but I've been told it was because the Omega had an Archimedes mouse on it, and the Omega's supposed to be PS2, so there were allegations that the "running" machine was actually a messed-with RiscPC (supposedly "backed up" by the "evidence" the MD wouldn't open the lid)

Of course it could all be scuttlebutt and lies, or bad blood between the companies, but it'd be interesting to hear from someone who was on the scene...

Unregistered user I know that the gentleman that designed the Omega's motherboard was fairly rude about Castle's new cack/expensive upgrade... calling John Ballance 'Mad'

Unregistered user Not having been there I don't know.

On that basis I can't comment and unless someone comes forward and goes on the record we'll all be no wiser.

I think that for MD it would really be in their interest nail this rumour on the head fast. They can certainly clear the air by simplying letting a third party evaluate their prototype, I can see no reason why Acorn User (or one or more of the other magazines) couldn't run Omega and have a look inside, after all its already been on show, a more one to one evaluation should not cause much hassle should it ?

Unregistered user MicroDigital already use Logitech PS2 3 button mice, it's what is supplied with the Mico, and it looks, by a strange coincidence, identical to the one supplied with the RiscPC.

Unregistered user Acorn used the Logitech Pilot Mk1 mouse, identical to the ones Logitech sold normally, except it was a quadrature mouse. If anybody knows where a Pilot Mk1 (not Mk2) PS/2 mice are available from, I want them! :) I havn't seen one for sale in a shop or mail order for 5 or 6 years. (I had, and still use my original one from 1991)

Unregistered user re: MD vs. Castle
I am not at all surprised. There's a lot riding on the sucess of the Omega and whatever Castle pulls out of the bag. It is a shame they had to go to personal insults.

All allegedly of course and in my opinion.

Unregistered user It was quite funny. While I was near the MD stand, Ballance wandered over to check out the Omega. "Put that camera away!" joked David Prosser, pointing to the Sony around Ballance's neck. Then Ballance asked if it was using an Acorn mouse, to which the reply was no, it was a Logitech one...

Oh, and later on I overheard /somebody/ say words to the effect of "Oooh, I hate that guy. He'd sell his own grandmother", though I mention no names.
Maybe I should also add an 'allegedly'...
