OK, there's a new PC virus in town that tries to con you into thinking you have to run an exe file to save your email account. It fakes the whole email (not just the from address) to make it look like it's the domain owners shutting you down, and at first glance looks quite convincing.
Why am I tempting the Wrath of Gerph by mentioning a PC virus on a RISC OS portal? Because I've just seen an example of "The Iconbar Management" saying that they're shutting down photodesk.iconbar.com's mail due to abuse which, needless to say, was news to us. If iconbar.com subdomainers, and indeed anyone with acornarcade.com addresses, see any of these messages, please bin them straight away. We wouldn't do that to you. We're lovely and fluffy.
Now I have to go away and save my uk.com mail by clicking on this executable... ;)

It makes me wonder why people still fall for the same old tricks. Email comes in and makes some claims. People listen. People cock up their computers once again and help the spread of viruses. Companies never (or *should never*) email customers attachments that they need to run to prevent bad things from happening. It seems that as soon as people are placed in front of computers, they become instantly gullible. If a letter arrived in the post one morning saying you had to pay five pounds to "save" your gas central heating or your car, would you pay? |

Even the banks have been fooled by some of these scams or traps. Simple rule - never open anything which you are
1. Not expecting
2. Don't recognise
3. Ends in exe if you are using a windows OSD for your email.
If in doubt, don't open but save to floppy & read using RISCOS (If it won't open with !Sparkplug etc. try dropping it into !edit & look at the first dew lines)

I have to admit that I got one of those last night and was fooled enough to send an email protesting my innocence to my ISP. I did have my suspicions at the time, but better safe than sorry. Loss of my email account would be a major inconvenience.
The attachment is a .pif file, which won't open on RISC OS anyway. Examining it in !Zap showed nothing sensible. |
