The 16th Foundation newsletter went out last night, and although much of it was very similar to the press release (with a few extra justifications after the howls of derision), there was a list of improvements that have been made to RISC OS that would be available to Select scheme members.
I haven't reproduced the entire newsletter - get a subscription if you're that interested - but hopefully, after all the flak he's been getting, Paul won't mind you seeing this list of RISC OS improvements.

"System application support for the global clipboard allowing cutting and pasting between compliant applications": RISC OS 4 already does this, as far as I know. I can copy text from Oregano and paste it in Ovation Pro. What's new here? |

Could some kind soul explain to me what people see in Cut and Paste between applications? If I want to export data between apps, I use drag and drop. If I want a persistant multi-clipboard with image thumbnails, I use a RAM Disc. I can understand Cut & Paste within an application (e.g OvPro), but why is it useful globally, when the methods I have described above are already universally supported (and faster, and more flexible)? |

IMO the main advantage of cut-and-paste over drag and drop is for copying portions of something. If you wanted to get this paragraph of text from your browser into an email, how would you do it? |

Well, I'm using oregano, So I can't select text. But with most apps (I've just checked StrongED / Writer) using the shift key reverses the normal function (i.e copies rather than moves or moves rather than copies). Perhaps everyone implementing this would be (ideally) better than cut & paste.
I think it comes down to whether or not a mixture of drag & drop and cut & paste confuses novice users. I'm yet to decide which I think is the case. |
