I've just seen a compact flash card to ide adapter laptop 2.5". Any reason why it shouldnt work on an acorn with a IDE hard drive podule? i thought it would be superb for use in a A3010 |

I think the adaptor will work fine, but you'll have to make sure you get a CF card that supports the IDE compatible access mode.
But I'm not expert on this, so you may want to wait for someone more knowledgeable to turn up |

I managed to find a daul card version on eBay recently, Plugged in a couple of cheap 1Gb CF cards and the whole thing worked fine on my old A7000, In theory it should be faster than a standard hardisc, but I guess an A7000s not the machine to test speed on. At the very least its quite a jump up from the machines original 80Mb drive and quieter. |

Bear in mind that the speed of CF cards varies greatly and even if you get a fast card, the machines IDE interface is limited to about 2MB per second. Cheers! |

Not a particular recommendation, but I've used !DiscSpeed, which is available at http://www.orac2.demon.co.uk/software/software.html - seems to do the job, and should work on RO3. |

Finally got it all sorted so i'll take a few pics and some tests. An old 61 mb drive versus a 128 mb compact flash. I got an A3IN ide interface, fitted real nice and the setup was very easy. Half tempted to get another to swap for my HCCS in the other A3010. |

Yes, post some pics and info. This is now on my shopping list for my A3000. It's got a Watford IDE inteface fitted at the moment with (if I remember correctly, it's been a lot of years since it was powered up) a 80meg HD in it. It can have a slave drive also, I suppose this interface would only be allowed to be the Master ? so I'd need to set my existing drive to Slave in order to copy all the data off it. Then dump the HD for silent running |

OK here we go, my big hard drive test system. Sadly my 64 meg hard drive didnt work and made an amuzing little whirr sound when plugged in. Also had another spare lappy drive that clonked like an outhouse door in a storm.
I tested all three systems using Disc Speed and a zip file of Gyrinus2 as Disc Speed recommended using a file of around 500k to test (572K for G2). The three systems:
My original A3010 ARM250 4 meg HCCS Ultimate Podule with IDE interface and a 270 mb IBM 2.5" Drive.

An A3010 with ARM2 Mezzy board 4 meg A3IN interface fitted with a compact flash adapter and a toshiba 128 mb compact flash card.

My Risc PC Arm610, RO 4, 64 meg and a big 5 1/4 Big Foot drive, 2 or 3 gig I think.
Heres the results for further details.

The HCCS and hard drive seems to pip the flash for quick access times but the A3IN and flash beats it when it gets to the bigger transfer amounts. Not quite a fair test because I dunno what difference the HCCS and A3IN will make. (Curses burst hard drives)
The flash card runs silent and was set up as usual by formatting with HForm.
Risc PC stonks em both but I just included it for fun. And thats about it, someone more clued should be able to provide a better breakdown. It was well worth doing in the end and will be a nice upgrade for an old none hard drive system.
The cf adaptor was a few quid off ebay, old cf card I blagged off the gf. The A3IN cost £36 from APDL but that was with an external IDE port, they have ones with no external IDE for around £15. So for £20 it would be a nice little upgrade.
PS anyone got any spare strongarms |
