I've just received an Iyonix, but it refuses to boot with a USB keyboard or mouse plugged in. The floppy initialises, then it hangs with no video output.
If I unplug all USB cables and power on, it start up and gets to the desktop. If I then plug in a USB keyboard or mouse, it either does nothing or reports an Abort.
Any ideas? How do you reset the CMOS without a keyboard for a start? |

Have you tried different keyboards and mice? IIRC it is picky. Also I seem to remember something about keyboards plugged in at the back, rather than front, being more reliable. |

I've tried several keyboards in front and back.
Plug anything into the back ports and it hangs on power on with no video (tried keyboards, mice, KVM and RF header for wireless mouse/keyboard)
Plugging things into the front port, it boots randomly and they still don't work.
It came with no HD and all the header cables pulled off - Google sorted those out. I've no idea where I can get the default HD image from.
I think it's a mark 1 tower, as there's no header on the motherboard for audio. |

For the HD image, ROOL's HardDisc4 archive should do the trick (available from this page).
If it's a development Iyonix there's no telling what ROM image it's running. So hopefully the USB issues are caused by a dodgy development ROM and aren't a hardware fault (especially if it's both the front & rear ports which are dodgy). I'd say your best bet is to get a hard disc in there with the boot sequence on it, make sure it boots OK with that, then take the hard disc back out and modify it to set up some useful configuration settings (serial mouse, enable ShareFS so you can share out the hard disc, etc.) Then if that works see if you can get the 5.20 ROM softload working (and whether it fixes USB). If that works then you should be able to use it to update the flash ROM. Or (once you've got the mouse working) see if there are any obvious modules unplugged which could be causing problems. |

LOL - thanks Jeffrey, I did think to use the ROOL HD image, but wasn't sure if it has all the Iyonix specific software.
I'll certainly try your suggestions. |

Don't give up yet - one thing I remembered is that the code which checks for R/Delete/etc. being pressed is separate from the main USB modules. So if you connect a USB keyboard and try a delete power-on then it will hopefully get as far as resetting the CMOS before getting stuck (or if you're lucky, it won't get stuck at all).
Also, make sure the keyboard is directly connected to one of the rear USB ports, as I believe the HAL only looks for it in specific ports. |

I did try holding Delete with a keyboard in the rear sockets, same issue though, no video, no beep etc.
I'm beginning to wonder if the USB card is faulty. Can any PCI USB card be used? |

I'm wondering if it could be a dodgy USB card we had a customers unit with similar symptoms.
Also the USB ports are paired one on the front one on the back. so to swap to the other pair of USB ports move the plug to the other socket on the front.
The computer should try and boot even with no USB card fitted.
Also try swapping the graphics card to another slot. (Note which one it was as it may need to go back there) |

I think most EHCI+OHCI compliant USB cards will work - although there might be some extra requirements due to the way the PCI slots are configured on the Iyonix (IIRC it's only the top two that are 5V and the other two are 3.3V?) |

Only 3.3v PCI sockets on this mobo and typically all the USB cards I have are 5v.
Chris - you're probably correct, sounds like a dodgy USB card to me. I'm surprised it even worked in the first place as the T55G24012A is a 5v card, hacksawed to fit into a 3v socket. Unless the sockets are dual 3/5v and Castle used the wrong sockets.
Swapping the graphics card and USB around makes no difference, it boots fine without any USB device plugged in.
Does anyone have a TRM they could send me? |

The Computer runs all cards at 3V3
Castle only ever fitted the one model of USB card which yes they cut the 3V3 slot in.
Be wary of anyone offering you a U20PC2+3N PCI card Scan Computers listed them so I bought 20 only to find they were a U20PC2+3N equivalent which did not work. They also refused to take them back without a restocking charge.

I got it working with a 99p USB card off eBay.
Rather weirdly it booted from the HD as soon as the new USB card was in. I suspect something in the USB stack causes the boot sequence to fail if it can't initialise a USB card.
The video output quality is shocking, it doesn't even look like the VGA output is grounded properly. I'll need to source a better nVidia, is there a list of supported devices somewhere?
EDIT: The USB card I used as a replacement was an Acer M5237 (also known as an Ali UPCI20A-6P)

You need a 3.3V GeForce 2 card. The one supplied with most Iyonixes is the GeForce 2 MX. You can actually use some earlier and later GeForce cards but you may run into driver issues and get no video output. |

From the RO source it appears to support two nVidia cards:
GeForce2
GeForce4 MX440
No mention of the FX5200 though, which appears to be an officially shipped card in later Iyonix.

The FX5200 *should* work for the desktop but won't work with Geminus or IyonixMesa (3D accelerator). |

Depending on which card you buy you might need to mod the VGA connector to swap the red & blue channels. In fact I think it might be everything except the FX5200 which doesn't need the mod. But the downside of the FX5200 (apart from the problems Simon mentions) is that it's only 8bpp and 32bpp modes which are correct - 16bpp modes will come out wrong as the card isn't capable of red/blue swapping them itself. |

The R/B issue could be fixed with a pixelshader, I've not looked at the driver, but am guessing its based on an open source linux driver and could be capable of providing a suitable interface. That would be possible if the 3D pipe was used for the desktop, but it isn't. You would need to render to a texture and then map this to a quad and swap r/b in a fragment shader as you mentioned. |
