Futurama: episode about trying to find his long, lost dog. He discovers that after being cryogenically frozen by accident the dog lived another 13 years so he doesn't resurrect the dog which has been found fossilized. However the final scene shows the dog waiting years for him outside his old place of work as if to contradict what he thought.
And that's supposed to be funny? |

Is this a bit like Marvin waiting in the car park for millions of years? |

Well he (main character) assumed the dog had led a full life so didn't resurrect him but the final scene shows him waiting forever as if it takes pleasure in the fact and takes the p*ss out of el mutto's loyalty. So clever - ha ha

Takes the *piss? Takes *pleasure*? Of course the programme isn't doing that! What the hell gives you the idea it is?
Just because it's a comedy show, not *everything* in it is intended to be funny. |

However the final scene shows the dog waiting years for him outside his old place of work as if to contradict what he thought. Hang on, I don't get the plot here.
Who got frozen, the man or the dog? Was it the man, so the day after freezing the dog carried on waiting, and it was only millions of years later once the man was defrosted that he learnt about the dog?
Or was it the dog that got frozen, and continued to wait outside the man's work when he got defrosted millions of years in the future?
Explain! With clarity!

The man fell into a cryo-tube while delivering a pizza to the place. His dog was outside IIRC. His dog then went home alerted his parents but they were too stupid to listen. The dog went back to cryo place and I think they phoned his owners to collect him. He was scratching at the cryo tube of his master but his (man in cryo tube) parents were too dumb to notice.
This was a retrospective of 1000 years in the past (1999). In the present (i.e. future) he was trying to find out what happened to his dog and they found fossilized remains which they could resurrect but he discovered the dog had lived another 13 years. He assumed therefore he had lived a full life and thus would be immoral presumably to resurrect him. So the viewer is led to believe that there is something positive to take away from it.
Then the final scene shows the dog waiting out side the place where his master worked for year on end eventually getting old and depressed. This leaves a negative taste in the mouth!
That's why I thought they were either trying to be funny by making fun of mutt's loyalty or trying to be oh-so clever by being nihilistic at the end. |

It's a bit sadistic to say the least. But it suits the story and what it's trying to achieve. The "happy" ending just wouldn't.

I thought it was trying to be ironic -you mean they're trying to be serious and do the tragic thing in a serious way? No, it's just that Matt Groening has always hated dogs. That's why he kills them off in so many episodes (see The Simpsons). |
