Will it be possible for some unfinished games to be released on the Internet?

Games like Eat My Dust only need some music and stuff before it was ready for a release.

Maybe someone could then have a look at the source and maybe make it ready for a release.

Of course it's possible - but whether it'll happen depends on whoever owns the rights. So, rather than ask the general question as above - which said person might not see, if you want to see specific unfinished games published online (such as your example) you need to find out who that is and ask them if they will and/or persuade them.

hmm... I think I know a way to contact an ex-FLAYMZ and VOTI member which is a bit active.

There was, at one point, a 3D rendering application on the Flaymz website which looked quite interesting. If you do get in touch, it would be good to know whether any of the unfinished projects the team were in charge of could be open-sourced.

This was purely a heavily optimised version of the Artex VRML engine that I did for MicroDigital to show off the Omega.
I'd imagine there's no chance of being able to release the source code.

It was Aspex that did the graphics software, I think. Artex did games like Exodus.

Yeah, and that's what I meant to type. My fingers appeared to disagree though :-/

Got your email Sion, thought I'd post here rather than reply.

Updating myself on the recent RO activity, little seems to have changed so if we did release our unfinished code there is still the main problem of a lack of decent graphics artists and someone has pinched our natty web address :-|

We did advertise quite heavily for graphics to finish off EMD. Most of the graphics were done by an excellent artist who then had little time to do any more. Even if I could get myself to bring about the release of unfinished code I don't see how any projects could be finished without resolving this core problem.

Then the problem is finding someone to finish off the code. It isn't as easy as it sounds. I worked with many, many coders during my RO stint and all have their own individual styles. It is rare to find a coder who comments all his stuff in the appropriate way for things to be completed. As far as I am aware Owain was not the best for commenting stuff as obviously he never intended someone else taking over. Then you have to find a coder who is able to take it on. Out of the many coders I ever worked with, I would say that the best were (in no order): Owain, Andrew H. and Tim P., Paul T., Richard W. and most definitely Lee Noar (he really rocks).

Added to that, how many games coders are left in the RO market and then is it worth it?

Thinking about it, I can't remember what unfinished projects we had. Yes, the VRML engine from Aspex was full of potential and would have been an excellent product if I had got it several years before I did. EMD needed so many graphics and added gameplay that it became unfeasible. There was a few GEK games that Gordon had but they needed gfx as well.

And then there was Starfighter from the 3DO.

I feel all sad now :-(

Jeffrey Lee and Jason Tribbeck are quite good game coders, maybe one of them could take on the job.

Would any of these games if were completed be able to be released commercialy or would they have to be free?

1. (Although ironically my RL job *is* as a games coder)
2. I probably don't have time
3. They still need extra art doing

Who would be the best guy for graphics?

Jason Tribbeck is good at music creating, so maybe he could do the music.
