I'm listening to an audiobook on an ipod nano but when I pause it and turn off it loses position. Is this a fault with the device?

Go into iTunes on your computer and right click and get info on the audiobook - make sure Media Kind under Options is actually set to Audiobook and the option to "Remember playback position" is selected. Resync.

Does it remember the position if you don't turn the iPod off? i.e. if you played something else and then went back to the audiobook?

No it does the same - jumps back to the same point. I'm not sure if it is just this audiobook or the iPod software as some other audiobooks seem to remember the position quite well when you play something else.
