1. A usb pen drive. Why would anyone not need one? I don't need to transfer big files around, not at home anyway. If I need one for work, they can stinking well pay for it. |

I fill the role of "we don't know what we're doing but it isn't working and was it a bad thing to go surfing porn with no firewall or antivirus enabled so please help me" person among friends, and I carry a complete diagnostic kit on my keyring because I'm fed up of having to end the above conversation with "I'd love to, but I don't happen to carry around 3GB of diagnostic programs around with me". They just bug me for months otherwise.
Anyway, I have a 128MB USB pen drive for the keyring, and right now they're offering a 256MB one for about £20 so I might upgrade and give my girlfriend the older one. I also have a 40GB USB external hard disk that I keep backups on, as well as CD ISO images of things where I might lose or destroy the CD accidentally, and which are important. Also it's handy for if I want to copy a CD, I can run it from the computer first to see if I really want to waste a CD making a physical copy of it. Virtual emulation is a wonder
Anyway, the point of this was:
YOU DO WANT USB TOYS. Trust me on this. |

acp. Might try one at home on the dialup line there.. Maybe.. Nah. |

Went for the 512MB and it's lovely. 1GB is too expensive for something that I WILL lose at some point. |

I got the 256MB one after all - it's a Sandisk Cruzer Micro - and it has a bright blue LED in the end which lights up everything when it's on and flickers when active (different speeds of flicker for different activities). Nice. I got one for the girlfriend too and christmas time is the Sandisk MP3 Companion, which is basically an MP3 player unit into which the USB stick plugs - meaning we can both use it, and have our own personal music which can be changed by simply swapping which stick is plugged in. (Pics: unplugged and plugged.)
So cool can't wait! |

Of course, past 2GB you won't be able to access it using DOSFS. |

Me!
Most people who want to read PC discs on RISC OS, actually. I know there's Win95FS which gives long filenames and things, but the RISC OS 5 DOSFS beta does that now. |

eBay can be a bit of a lottery.
But I just got a 512 USB drive from there for £30. Not sure quite how good value it is but what the hell. |

I've often wondered about learning my way round MacOS and writing a few programs for it, especially now they've done away with the old OS kernel.... this could be a cheap intro. I was reading a book about Mac OS X last week, strangely enough.... |
