Happy Birthday from Acorn Arcade!

Posted by Acorn Arcade team on 00:00, 29/1/2008 | , , , ,

But whose birthday is it?

It's ours, of course!

Ten years ago today, Acorn Arcade officially opened to the public, as this handily-archived newsgroup posting shows. With Alasdair Bailey and Graham Crockford at the helm the site soon increased in popularity enough to warrant moving to its own domain name, acornarcade.com, and eventually to its own dedicated server, owned by our benevolent dictator Rich Goodwin. A few years later Acorn Arcade gave birth to The Icon Bar, which then in an ironic turn of events absorbed the content of Acorn Arcade in late 2006, in order to give both sites a much-needed overhaul.

But what does all this mean?

Merry Christmas from The Icon Bar!

Posted by Andrew C. Poole on 00:00, 25/12/2007 | , ,

[TIB Christmas Logo]Well it's that time of year again. It hardly seems like a full year since we last wished all our readers a very Merry Christmas. Yet again, most of you are probably too busy downing the bottle of whatever-it-is that you found in the back of the cupboard, and stuffing yourself with mince pies to notice this post, but I'm still going to say it anyway.

Merry Christmas to all our readers, and we hope you have a wonderful new year - whatever you're doing and however you're celebrating.

It was an APRIL FOOLS you plonkers

Honestly, did you really think you could get rid of my marathon programming threads that easily? And myspace? Eewwww. Podcasts, on the other hand...

New features

Grr!But in all seriousness, our transformation into an Apple fanbois wet dream was due to our latest feature, the site themes feature thing, from which you can select from a selection of different themes with which to alter the site more to your liking. So far we've got the standard TIB and AcornArcade themes, as well as the Apple one, and a simple RISC OS one. More themes will be arriving as soon as we can get the sword away from Rich and chain him back down behind his keyboard.

There's also a new script we're playing with to allow RSS updates of forum posts. Either using a regular RSS reader, or setting up an RSS "account" in Thunderbird (etc.) pointing here:
http://www.iconbar.com/forums/rss-rss20.php
...you'll be able to see when new messages have been written. It's like that list down the side of the main site, but even more divorced from the forum itself! You can change the rss20 bit to rss09, rss10 or atom03 for other flavours of feed.

iConbar

Paul and Rich as PC and MacHello, and welcome to the new new look iConbar. Since we're all Mac users now (even Rich!), we thought it was about time that we ditched RISC OS properly and changed the focus of the site to cover all things Apple. No more will I be posting marathon threads in the Playpen about games that no-one is interested in and that I'll never complete, for I've found a new hobby of making podcasts, directing fan films on YouTube, and chatting on my myspace. And no, you're not invited. It's strictly Mac users only.

Go Apple. It's just so much better.

Media Watch and Free Ads return

Posted by Jeffrey Lee on 12:00, 14/2/2007 | ,

Bender's BrainGood news, everyone! The Media Watch and Free Ads pages are back, bigger and better than ever!

Whether you've just spotted Bender's brain or Del Boy's Compacts, the media watch page is the place to tell the world about it. 1 And if you're trying to flog the above, why not advertise it in the Free Ads section?

It's taken us almost two weeks to get these new versions working, which is why there haven't been any updates recently. 2

Also, attachment deletion in the forums is now working. Hurrah!

1 Unless of course you spot the two items I've just mentioned, in which case we already know.
2 This is a lie. More proper updates soon, though!

Happy New Year

Posted by Andrew Duffell on 12:00, 1/1/2007 | ,

The Vigay enjoys a new year drink...Happy New Year from The Icon Bar! That's your lot for 2006, and we'd like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last year. Special credit goes to those who have written articles, given us abuse, and Richard Goodwin who makes this site happen.

Chris Williams has given out the RISC OS equivalent of New Years Honours on his website. No real surprises with Martin Wuerthner gaining this (last) years top award.

What are your hopes and predictions for RISC OS, and the wider technology world in 2007?

Merry Christmas!

[TIB Christmas Logo]Well, it's that time of year again. By the time many of you read this Christmas will probably have been and gone, and the other three of you will be too busy stuffing yourselves, possibly with mince pies and the contents of the random bottle of something you found in the back of the cupboard, to notice what this posting says.

Because here at The Icon Bar, we know you're all interested to know, I've recieved word that The Paul Vigay won't be leaving his computer alone on Christmas day, as he tells me he gets withdrawal symptoms if he does. And for all you Vigay-lovers out there, I've provided you with a quick link to The Vigay's Christmas Speech that he sent out the other day to his Orpheus customers. Enjoy!

Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, all of us here at The Icon Bar hope you have a magical Christmas and the most wonderful New Year.

Icon Bar and Acorn Arcade relaunch

Posted by The Icon Bar team on 17:36, 26/11/2006 | , , ,

Change is good. Welcome to Icon Bar 2.0.

We're expanding the site's remit significantly, bringing new areas of interest to existing, lapsed and ex-RISC OS users: alternative platforms, new technologies, and various other geek-related things, whilst still keeping tabs on what's happening in the RISC OS scene. We might reminisce about the good old days of dusty computing. We might do a sex wee thinking about the next Mac OS.

Don't get us wrong, we're not dismissing RISC OS completely. But we have realised that many other things interest us too - perhaps as a consequence of the sensibilities that Acorn instilled in us - and we want to share them with you.

We might even begin to enjoy computing again.
