The Icon Bar: News and features: TEK released!

TEK released!

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:28, 15/5/2002 | ,

Yes, it's finally out! I'm not even going to bother with the usual guff, let's go straight to the full press release:
After more than four years of development, Artex Software are proud to present the realtime strategy game TEK 1608!

Some features:

  • High resolution rendered graphics

  • State-of-the-art design

  • Stunning gameplay, easy to understand but challenging

  • Screen resolutions from 640x480 up to 1024x768 (the latter requires 2MB VRAM)

  • Additional smaller windows can be opened for guarding or tracking your battle units or buildings

  • A small map of the whole area is displayed on the status bar, showing all your units/buildings, and everything you know about the enemy

  • The surface consists of isometric fields with four height levels

  • Your units can only see what's within their radar. So you can hide movements and make really nasty unseen attacks.

  • Everything outside the radar of your units is displayed dark.

  • Every place never visited before is unknown, ie black.

  • Three different terain sets

  • 12 different battle units

People will be able to purchase TEK at the Wakefield Show 2002. The TEK package is available for about 30 ukp and includes the Artex best-sellers "Exodus - The Colonisation of Space" and "Ankh - The Tales of Mystery" as well as "BotKiller 1" and "BotKiller 2".

The game is available from R-Comp Interactive:

Unregistered user I take it that it isn't going to work with my poor ARM 710 then :(

Unregistered user If you have a look at the "rival" site www.acorn-gaming.org.uk, you'll find that Gareth says it's just about playable on a RiscPC 700. We have tested it with the ARM610 and found that, even after optimising, it is just a bit too slow to call it playable with that processor. Future optimisations might improve this, but TEK is already quite speed-optimised.

Unregistered user I'm not sure whether to buy it soon or wait until it's more Arm 7 optimised.

Unregistered user Trust me, wait until it's more ARM 7 optimised... I've tried it on an ARM 710 and it's a bit shaky, but then again I'm happy because I'll be upgrading to a StrongARM before long. You're better to wait though, and get the benefits of playing it smoothly. Also, I've met one or two bugs along the way...

Unregistered user Possibly more importantly, wait till it's been fixed so that it crashes less... :|

Unregistered user I can't get past level 3 because it crashes.

Bummer.

Also, Ankh freezes the machine before leaving the desktop. Oh yes, Exodus does too.

Perhaps it's my machine... (28Mb SA RiscPC RO4.29)
