In the end I've decided to go with these.
The microphone is now broken, which renders them pretty much useless as a headset, as replacement microphones don't appear to be sold separately.
Interestingly it was the headset which was broken, not the microphone - even though plugging other stuff into the microphone socket of the headset worked OK, and (at least as far as I can remember!) plugging the mic directly into the PC didn't seem to work.

But at least I now have a nice new pair with ear cups which aren't covered in years of filth.
