One of my RiscPC starts up at the supervisor prompt. They seems to be no response from the keyboard. Reseting holding down the R key brings desktop ok. On restart from the desktop it will boot to the supervisor prompt again until I reset-R.

Any suggestions on why this could be happening?

Arm710 with 64 megs of ram, 6 gig hdd and RiscOS 3.6

Power on R only resets certain settings.
Power On Delete is what you need.

Have you checked the battery for leakage/going furry?

Sounds like the CMOS is not working. Have you checked the battery to make sure it isn't furry/leaking? Does the clock keep going when the machine is turned off?

Something to watch out for - IIRC a 6GB drive on RO3.6 would need "*configure ADFSBuffers 0" to avoid disc corruptions, and the reset-R will probably have set it to a non-zero value.

The battery is new and no sign of damage on the moboo. Thanks for the replies.

The system doesn't set the clock at all apart from the month.

Edit: Seems the cmos has gone heywire I guess the PO left it far too long before doing a battery change. What I don't understand is Reset-Del boots from the hdd.

Still open to ideas though.

The default for a RiscPC is to boot from ADFS::4 so that's correct behaviour.

Check that there's power to the CMOS chip (should be 5v on pin 8 with power on and about 1.2v with power off) and also that the battery circuit is charging. Battery +ve to 0V should be over 2v with power on and about 1.2v with power off.
