RISC OS Select 4 Issue 2 now available

Posted by Andrew Poole on 21:57, 30/4/2007 | , ,

Paul Middleton just emailed to let us know that RISC OS Select 4 Issue 2 is now available to download to any RISC OS Select subscriber who renewed their subscription on or after January 1st 2006.

In the PR, Paul Middleton says: "Select 4 and its underlying RISC OS Six technology represents over 10 man years of development which has taken RISC OS 4 from its 26 bit version to its new fully 32 bit neutral source version."

CDs are being sent to subscribers within the next week or so, and those of you impatient enough to not want to wait can download it from the RISCOS Ltd RISC OS SIX website now.

It's a bit depressing when an OS release boasts "printing now possible".

grin Yes, that is terrible.

Anyway, I hope that this is successful and everyone using it finds it very useful. I don't have a computer which can run it, but hopefully we'll see a version for the A9 before 2008 is over (probably with the same feature set but called RISC OS 7/Menu 5i2.3 or something).

As programmers Rob and Paul clearly don't want an OS that enables users to exclude potentially unstable programs and offers users an easy way to feed problems back to the software developer with clues to where the bugs might lie. Now that is sad.

My main two questions are:

- printing was possible but bugged in RO4.39; is this what's been redressed?

- is there any indication of when anybody can download it? Why are they restricting their sales like this?

Don't encourage him on here! He's bad enough on the newsgroups, but I can killfile him there!
And, no. He doesn't!

You can download it now. Just go to their website, click on the 'Download' link and it will take you to a page from which you can download the installer or the entire CD ISO image.
Click on the relevant link and enter your "RISC OS Select" username and password. Download will then start automatically.

You can killfile him here, as well, Paul. Look immediately underneath any of his (or anyone's, for that matter) post and behold the mighty glory of the 'block user' link.

Attached is a hastily saved screenshot with two such links ringed. As you can see it's not available on my own comment (because blocking one's self would be a bit silly) - but it's available to me to block you and the previous poster.

Another reason for nabbing the screenshot, of course, is for posterity, to earmark that (prior to this one I've made 666 posts - one of my favourite numbers. Devil

Hmm, definately don't have that option here. Can't show you an attachment to prove it though...

Not all users have the same options available. There is a reason for this, but I think I'll let the creator of the system explain it tongue

I know that's the case with some options - which is why Adam can't do attachments - but I thought the 'block [annoying] users' option was a global one?

Andrew, when you reply to a post and it isn't the last one, can you PLEASE quote some of it so we can work out what the hell the context of your reply is, without having to fart arse around working out its position, and that of its predecessor is in the threading! Or at least make your question a little clearer - ie is what restricted to subscribers only?

I think what you're asking is if it's only subscribers to Select who can download Select. To which the answer is yes.

Yes. You must be a subscriber in order to run RO6 and Select 4i2. No idea what their plans are, but in my opinion once they have finished with Select 4 and are happy with it, they should package it up for general retail release to all users who are running RO4 or later as a softloadable upgrade.

Do !PCx86, Impression and other 26 bit software run fine on RISC OS 6, or do you need something like Aemulor (not that that runs on RiscPCs yet)?

Edit: d'oh, it's built as a 26bit OS from 26/32 bit neutral sources. That teaches me to post before I can read.

I don't have it either, so it's obviously resricted to you 'special' users.

So, I have to spam the forums (resulting in other people blocking me) to be able to use the block function?

And what is the number of posts by the way?

Well thanks to this thread:
http://www.iconbar.com./forums/viewthread.php?threadid=10333&page=1#102027

It's not that hard to work out anymore.

Just make 100 posts, and then get a bug fixed.
